April 2012 - Babe Ruth In The News
Babe Ruth league opens the new season with a new sense of purpose Written by Jim Henry Democrat assistant sports editor http://www.tallahassee.com/article/20120429/SPORTS/204290319/Babe-Ruth-league-opens-new-season-new-sense-purpose The Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth League could not have started any better for Talcor on Friday night, as pitchers Stephen Jones and John Buehler combined on a five-inning no-hitter. Yet, what made the night even more unique was the game itself. For the first time in more than two decades, the league — long considered a vital stepping stone between youth leagues and the high school game — has renewed its affiliation with the city's high school programs. For the most part, each of the league's seven teams feature 13- to 15-year-olds from specific schools or school zones in an attempt to help revive the once-elite league. Staffs also include local high school coaches, headlined by Rickards varsity coach Brian Kelley.
Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth certainly has a rich tradition. The 1984 all-star team, led by Dean Palmer and Reggie Jefferson, captured the organization's first of five World Series titles."Just being able to see other players you will be competing against in the future helps make it a great experience," said Jones, a Chiles High freshman who threw the first four innings Friday and was relieved by Buehler, a Timberwolves' teammate, in the season-opening win. "It's also good to be able to play with kids that are your teammates in high school."
More than 100 players participated in Opening Day ceremonies Saturday at Springsax Field. Bobby Rice, a former Babe Ruth player who starred at North Florida Christian and plays at Tallahassee Community College, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Teams will play a 16-game schedule and two all-star teams will be selected at season's end. First-year league President Stone Grable said the league made necessary changes to survive, with the emphasis on making it, "a high school-like experience."
The league no longer enforces a mandatory "must-play rule" and it also eliminated its Prep Division, which was designated for 13-year-olds who were playing on a regulation-sized field for the first time.Three of the league's five World Series titles were in the Prep Division. The organization's last title was three years ago.Next Level Baseball directed the league's boot camp for players in preparation for the season. Those close to the league point out the number of players at the Babe Ruth level has been shrinking over the years and, likewise, the level of play has diminished.
"There needed to be change," said Paul Mauck Jr., a coach in the league since 1994 and one of nine current board members. His late father, Paul Mauck Sr., coached Tallahassee to the 1984 World Series title and was considered the league's best and most respected ambassador.
"It's always good to mix it up, though that doesn't mean it has to stay this way always," said Mauck, also a former Tallahassee-Leon Babe Ruth player (1969-71). "The overall talent level still has to increase. Historically, this was a feeder system for the high schools and it has been a great advantage for these kids to play competitively with and against their (high school) peers. "They have to earn their playing time."
Chiles assistant varsity coach Brad Jackson also embraces the league's renewed affiliation with the high schools. On Saturday, Jackson helped coach Talcor, comprised of players in the Chiles program or younger players zoned for the school. Leon, Lincoln (two teams) and North Florida Christian also have designated teams in the league, while the two remaining teams feature a mix of players from multiple schools such as Florida High, John Paul II and Rickards.Games also will be played on local high school fields in addition to Springsax.
"They get to play and compete with guys they will be playing with their entire high school career, so I think that's an advantage," Jackson said. "As coaches, it gives us more time to work with them and also gives us the opportunity to see some of the younger players before they get to school, and have a plan for them when they arrive."
